Curriculum

Sensorial

These are exercises in perception, observation,  discrimination, and classification that play a major role in helping our children to best develop their sense of logic and concentration.   The children will use materials such as the brown stairs and pink tower to discriminate between length, height, width and volume.  Discrimination of rough and smooth, sound, smell and colors are used to further their concentration skills.  The geometric solids are also placed in this area for both the perception of the different shapes but to also learn the names of the cylinder, ovoid, sphere and other shapes.

Practical Life

This area of the curriculum focuses on developing skills that allow the child to effectively control and deal with the social and physical environment in which he lives. There is a growing pride in being able to "do it for myself."  In this area the children will learn to pour without spilling, use tweezers, tongs, eye droppers, and scissors. Simple carpenty tools, simple sewing, shoe tieing and buttoning,  and caring for plants and our fish tanks will give them a start on tasks useful as they grow.

Geography & Science

Cultural geography is studied through the individual continents.  They will be exposed to the music, artifacts, dress, and traditions.  Roots and Wings families can share their traditions with us.  Some of the sciences topics that we study include botany, living versus non-living, health and nutrition, the solar system, dinosaurs, zoology, and vertebrates versus invertebrates.

Math

Learning the numbers symbols, and quantities can be accomplished with the red and blue rods, sandpaper numerals,  spindle boxes, cards and counters, and hanging bead chains.  As the children become ready they can use the addition, subtraction and multiplication boards.  They will also work on fractions, the concept of telling time, and learn to count by 2's, 3's, on up through 10's.

Language

Due to our multi-age classroom design, our pre-readers are constantly exposed to the children in the class who are already reading.  This helps to create a spontaneous interest in learning how to read.  Moveable Alphabets made up of easily manipulated letters are used for the early stages of phonetic word creation and spelling. They facilitate early reading and writing tasks during the period when young children are still not comfortable with their own writing skills. Even before the children are comfortable in their handwriting skills, they spell words, compose sentences and stories, and work on punctuation and capitalization with the moveable alphabets.  The children begin writing by tracing around metal insets, shapes cut out in metal to begin the process of straight and curved lines.  They progress up through the materials using journals to first write words and then to create their own stories.

Music

The children study continents throughout the year.  Music is incorporated into the classroom to go with the region that they are studying.  They will hear music, sing songs, and see instruments from these areas with professional music instruction.
